I've been busy embroidering my own designs and children's drawings on my embroidery machine at home for 7 years now but in Lockdown 2020, took my business back to basics, learning how to embroider by hand again and teaching my 2 young daughters (then aged 4 and 7) how to do it too!
We are a bit obsessed with anything creative in our house- writing, drawing, painting, model making. So of course, we leaned to embroider own designs. We started with our NHS Rainbows and the ideas grew from there.
Nowadays I teach face-to-face Parent & Child Embroidery Classes in Stockport during the School Holidays but I wanted to bring my lessons online too so that more people can reach them and learn how to create their own piece of 'Sew Unique Artwork' themselves.

For us, sewing and embroidery has been a brilliant journey, learning how to add little extras each time we try a new project, so that we are now capable of producing our own personalised keepsakes gifts to give our friends and family using multiple stitch types and different fabrics.

Hi! I’m Kelly and I’m passionate about capturing life’s most memorable moments… in embroidery!!!
I've been busy embroidering Children's drawings and Loved One's handwritten messages on my embroidery machine at home for 7 years now. Working around my 2 young daughters and building my online business. During Lockdown 2020 however, my embroidery machine blew up! There were no Sewing Machine Repair Shops open due to the Lockdown rules, so I was left without a means of income for over 6 weeks whilst I waited for the shops to re-open and source a new motor for it. But, as I’m the kind of person who needs to keep busy to keep calm, I took to my cupboard packed full of embroidery supplies and thought "What else can I do with all this in the meantime?" So, instead of just drawing our NHS Rainbows, I taught my daughters (then aged 4 and 7) how to sew them as well! Home schooling for us became Embroidery School and I found it a great way to spend time with the girls, doing a calm, mindful activity that is relatively simple once you master a basic backstitch. My 4 year old is an absolute natural and it was brilliant for developing her concentration and fine motor skills. For me, hand embroidery makes me sit down and actually stay in one place for an hour or 2 whilst I stitch out a drawing and watch a film at the same time. I'm very easily distracted when at home, with a massive To Do List and chores that never end, so an excuse to just sit down is exactly what I need sometimes. After I realised I still had plenty of hoops and fabric left in my cupboard, I decided to put DIY Embroidery kits together. I wrote some instructions and started selling them via my Facebook page (I didn't have a website back then). I even put together a few online videos which I uploaded to a private Facebook group as some people said they struggled with written instructions and were more of the YouTube generation. I'm definitely an 'inbetweener' when it comes to instructions. Generally I'd prefer to not be looking at a screen, but for tricky bits, sometimes I can spend hours looking at an image and re-reading the words underneath but still can't work out how to do it! So I offer both options with my Embroidery Kits now- illustrated pdf instructions and online video tutorials. As we came out of Lockdown, I asked if I could stock some of my kits in my local Coffee Shop (The Bake House in Great Moor) and Laura, the owner suggested that once things were back to normal, I should host a pop up embroidery stand to show people how to get started with the kits. What a great idea! But then came 2 more Lockdowns and another long winter of high Covid cases in 2021/22 in what felt like forever for people to get fully vaccinated and start to feel safe in public again. So the idea never progressed in 2021 at all. But, in February this year, I had high hopes for the Spring and started making plans to run embroidery classes in person. My dream is to create classes where people come together again and enjoy some time just sitting and being calm with their little ones. Much like the 'old days' of playgroup where mums all group around the craft table and can enjoy a chat and a cup of tea whilst their sons or daughters are engaged in an activity. (Okay, not always quite so perfect as it sounds but there are moments! Certainly when children get a bit older). I also run classes for Children only at The Art Hub in Bramhall during the school holidays and hope to expand to other venues next Summer. My girls are very crafty and I know they would love crafty Summer Clubs. I ran my first Parent & Child embroidery class at Marple Library during the Easter Half Term break and loved every minute. To be honest, I just made it up as I went along. I still had lots of hoops in my cupboard so offered the option to either draw your own initial and decorate it, or draw around your hand and embroider that instead. Some children just wanted to learn how to sew and others were more keen to design their own bespoke creations from start to finish. Now that I've taught children in Stockport how to get started with embroidery I want to keep up the momentum and teach them what else they can do with their new found skills. I have ideas in place, one for each half term, of how they can develop their skills so that they can create their very own keepsakes and gifts for loved ones too. Maybe they will set up their own sewing enterprises one day too. So my online classes are just that. A stepping stone path starting from learning how to draw a design directly onto fabric and stitching it out. Then learning how to come up with designs on paper first, create their own patterns and sew them too. And then, we will try different sized pieces and uses, including cushions and personalised felt patches. Basically all the items I've been embroidering for others over the last 7 years but now you can do it yourself, in a way that is great for your wellbeing and teaches you design skills you might otherwise never have developed.
